Resources About Cosmetic Dentistry: Sedation Dentistry

Sleep during dental procedures with dental sedation

If you have a high level of fear of dental procedures, difficulty with your gag reflex during procedures, limited time for complex procedures, very sensitive teeth or have experienced difficulty becoming numb for dental procedures, sedation dentistry should be discussed with your dentist. Dental sedation is also considered for people with a fear of needles and shots or find the smells, sounds, noises and tastes of dental care to be overwhelming.

When undergoing cosmetic dental procedures with dental sedation, you are given a small pill (analgesics, anti-anxiety agents, and /or sedatives) to take about an hour prior to your dental procedure. You will need to attend your dental appointment with someone who will drive you home. You will become drowsy and be placed on a monitor to watch your vital signs. After your procedure is completed, you will be free to go home where you will be quite relaxed for several more hours. You will sleep for up to six hours, which means complex procedures that may normally require up to eight appointments are accomplished in just one - and you will have little to no memory of the experience.

Sedation dentistry provides for pain-free dental procedures while you are in a deeply relaxed state, but yet responsive.
